What a moving fund covers

Moving abroad costs more than the flight. Most landlords want a deposit and the first month up front, visas come with fees, translations and health checks, and the first weeks bring a burst of spending on bedding, kitchen basics, a local SIM and transport passes. On top of that, a buffer of a few months of living costs protects you while you find work, wait for your first pay or settle in.

For a move to Madrid with a three-month buffer, a two-month deposit, $900 of flights, $600 of visa costs and $800 of shipping, the total comes to about $14,000, mostly the living buffer and deposit. With $2,000 already saved and a year to go, that is about $1,000 a month.

Ways to lower it

Staying in a furnished short-term rental for the first month avoids buying furniture before you know the city. Selling large items instead of shipping them is usually cheaper. If you are moving for a job, ask whether the employer offers a relocation allowance; many do, especially for international hires.

Common questions

How much money do I need to move abroad?

Usually three to six months of living costs plus deposit, flights and visa fees, often $8,000 to $20,000 for one person.

How much is a rental deposit abroad?

One to three months of rent is common; in Korea deposits are much larger.

Should I ship my furniture?

Rarely. Shipping a container often costs more than buying again, especially for short or uncertain moves.
