What the numbers mean
Each bar shows how far your salary would go if you earned the same amount but spent it in another city, expressed as the home salary that would buy the same life. It is the idea behind purchasing power parity, applied to an ordinary single-person budget including rent.
A $60,000 US salary spent in Bangkok buys roughly what $155,000 buys at home on our figures, because living costs there are about 61% lower. In Lisbon it feels like about $70,000, and in London like about $46,000.
Why it is not the whole story
Local salaries are usually much lower in cheaper countries, so this view is most useful for remote workers, retirees and anyone moving with income from home. Taxes, visas and health insurance also change the result. For a job offer paid locally, the salary equivalent abroad calculator is the better tool.
Common questions

It is a similar idea, using World Bank price levels plus typical city rents.
Does it include taxes?
No. It compares buying power before tax.
