The 2,080-hour shortcut
A standard US full-time year is 40 hours a week for 52 weeks, or 2,080 hours, with paid vacation and holidays counted as hours you are paid for. Divide a salary by 2,080 and you have the hourly rate. A handy mental shortcut is to halve the salary and drop the thousands: $60,000 a year is roughly $30 an hour (exactly $28.85).
Hourly rate = yearly salary ÷ (hours per week × weeks per year)
If you regularly work 45 or 50 hours on a salary, enter your real hours. A $60,000 salary at 50 hours a week works out to about $23 an hour, which is a useful number when comparing a salaried offer with an hourly one.
Gross vs take-home
These figures are before tax and deductions. Income tax, Social Security and Medicare, plus any retirement and insurance contributions, come out before your paycheck arrives, and the amount varies by state and situation. Switch to the After tax tab for an estimate, or use the take-home pay calculator for the full breakdown. For what your time is worth after work costs as well, see the real hourly wage calculator.
