Why subscriptions creep up

Subscriptions are designed to be easy to start and easy to forget. Free trials roll into paid plans, prices rise a dollar or two at a time, and a service you used heavily one winter keeps billing all year. Surveys regularly find that people underestimate their subscription spending by a wide margin when asked to guess.

Listing them in one place is the fix. Go through a couple of months of bank and card statements, add every recurring charge, and the yearly total often makes decisions easy. The example adds up to $140 a month, or $1,680 a year.

Rotate instead of stacking

A simple habit is to keep one or two streaming services at a time and rotate monthly, canceling one when you finish what you wanted to watch. Annual plans are cheaper per month for services you are sure to keep, and many apps have free tiers that are enough for occasional use.

How do I find all my subscriptions?

Check two or three months of bank and card statements, app store subscription settings and your email for receipts.
